Sixth graders are off to a great start! We spent time getting to know each other and completing team building activities. The class also created a "Sixth Grade Constitution" to outline the behaviors we expect from ourselves and each other in order for everyone to achieve their personal best. In math, students began working with the first unit from our new math program. They decomposed and rearranged shapes to find the area. Ask your child to show you the online component of the program or watch this video for a tutorial on how to access the materials.

In addition, sixth grade writers have been busy learning about personal narratives. They began by studying mentor texts and finding positive attributes that can be used in their own writing. From there, students created maps of special places to use as inspiration for possible personal narrative stories. In reading, the class enjoyed choosing just right books from our classroom and school libraries. They worked hard to practice responding to literature by turning the question around and using specific details.
Finally, sixth grade scientists began their year using gummy bears to explore the meaning of scientific inquiry. Do you want to know more about osmosis? Ask a sixth grader! In social studies, students reviewed the location of continents and oceans and began a jigsaw activity to teach each other more about each one.
