In math, sixth graders continued their work with ratios and rates this week. They started by using tape diagrams to solve problems involving percents. Students also utilized benchmark fractions to create equivalent percentages. Sixth grade readers learned new vocabulary words related to an article about year round school on Achieve3000. It led to a very spirited debate about whether or not this is a good idea. In addition, the class began a study of main idea and details found in nonfiction texts. Next, sixth grade writers continued to work on the body paragraphs of their teen activism essays. They focused on specific details and transitional language. Finally, students continued their work on a poster or comic strip with a water droplet as the main character to teach an audience what they learned about the water cycle.
